Description

This song combines imagination, sea creatures, and the ocean drum, a favorite instrument amongst my students. I wrote “Motion in the Ocean” to facilitate passing the ocean drum in a group setting, with each turn allowing the child to suggest a sea creature of their choosing.

I’ve adapted this song for many settings, from early childhood groups to older children in individual music therapy sessions. I’ve used picture cards to provide sea creature choices that children can then name or choose, and even presented words written out to work on reading skills.

I’ve also used the song without the ocean drum, instead substituting for other instruments or even as a standalone tune with no instrumental accompaniment at all. This versatile song is simple but catchy, and fits beautifully into an ocean-themed session or unit.
