Description
Rhymes are key ingredients in many songs and children’s stories, but did you know that rhyming is an important developmental skill for children? Rhyming teaches children how language works, by helping them notice and work with the sounds within words. When children are familiar with a nursery rhyme or rhyming book, they learn to anticipate the rhyming word. This prepares them to make predictions when they read, another important reading skill.
I’ve seen this first-hand as my son started learning to read in kindergarten last fall. I wanted to help other children practice their rhyming skills, which is where “Time to Rhyme” comes in. What I love about this song is that it paves the way for the lyrics to be tailored to a child’s interests, learning areas, and abilities.
Feel free to ditch the existing rhymed verses included in the song, and instead write your own. I’ve done just that time and time again with my small groups, individual students, and even my own 4-year-old daughter who is now starting to get the hang of rhyming!
